On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, thousands of students, employees and visitors came together to celebrate the first-ever collaborative Earth Day celebration at the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical center. The Texas Medical Center consists of 47 member institutions, with 73,000 employees, 32,000 (full-time) students and approximately 160,000 visitors every day. Through this celebration, the TMC community learned about the benefits of recycling, ways to reduce one's ecological footprint, and how the TMC is going green.
Nearly 40 hospitals, universities, businesses, governmental agencies and community organizations participated and shared information on their sustainability initiatives. Special events included an electric car display, an “automated container recycler machine” that prints out a receipt—redeemable for a gift, and an Earth Day Roulette Wheel that awarded eco-prizes continuously during the event. In addition, the celebration included a demonstration of institutional green-cleaning techniques and much more. In addition, 1,200 Houston-friendly oak and pine trees were given away.
Recycling bins collected plastic, paper, composting, aluminum, eye glasses, hearing aids and cell phones.

The event was held at the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons located at 6550 Bertner at Moursund from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Waterside Court featured a special Earth-Day buffet.
This event was organized by the Houston Medical Center Recycling Collaborative. see press release and view a PowerPoint photo slide show
